Sam Olstein started White Furniture on Biddle Avenue south of Eureka in 1946 and he wanted the store to stand out. Since he was a one-man operation and couldn't afford the fancy neon lights that that lit up many of the businesses along Biddle, he decided to outline his store's front windows with fluorescent lights. He threw the switch and walked across the street to a doughnut shop to get a cup of coffee. He came outside and was sipping his coffee and admiring his work and a drunk stumbled by and said, 'Boy, is that white.' That is how Sam decided upon the name White Furniture."
Jeff Olstein started working summers when he was 14 years old and joined White Furniture full time in 1971 and worked with his father until Sam retired. The biggest lesson he learned from his father was to under promise and over deliver. Jeff took over full ownership from his father in 1980 and began to increase the quality level of the products White Furniture carried and upgrade the look of the store.
Scott Jordan joined White Furniture at the age of 16 working after school and on weekends and like Jeff he started at the bottom. Scott has had every job possible in a furniture store from stock boy to delivery to service to manager. Jeff and Scott formed a succession plan many years ago to make sure that White Furniture would continue beyond Jeff's retirement. On December 31, 2012 Jeff officially retired and Scott became the owner of White Furniture.
Many years after its inception White Furniture is still in Wyandotte on Biddle Avenue serving many of the same families over several generations. Some families have moved out of the area but still come back to White furniture for their furniture needs. White Furniture has been experiencing consistent growth over the past few years and now delivers throughout southeast Michigan.
